Class Overview
What are practices like?
We practice Latosa Escrima, as taught to us by Rene Latosa. His system is principle based but still very practical.
A coach leads the practice session. We do about 90 minutes of organized technical practice and 30 minutes of sparring (using foam weapons). Our practice emphasizes strong hitting, footwork, and fundamentals and applications of the Latosa concepts in varying scenarios, assorted weapons: e.g., you have a stick and someone attacks with a staff).
All participants, regardless of rank or experience, work together during the technical practice. The activities have many levels of understanding so there's always room to improve. Our goal is to organize workouts that flow, that provide good cardio and strength training, and that allow students enough time and repetition under varying conditions to progress. We try to minimize talking/lecturing, as people get better quicker by moving, finding out what works, and getting a bit of feedback along the way.
Our classes are beginner-friendly. We are an accommodating and welcoming bunch, and you will have lots of support as you start figuring things out. But you do need to work at it.
We welcome experienced athletes from all martial arts styles and sports. The Latosa system and our training methods are quite flexible in implementation.
Our philosophy is that basics (or more reasonably 'fundamentals') are all that really matter; they are all you can count on in a violent encounter; and so, they comprise the majority of our practice. Through the Latosa concept of transition, you will see that the basics apply freely to a variety of weapon types, fighting ranges and situations.
Gear Equipment
To start off, yourself, a water bottle and loose comfortable workout clothing. We do have loaner equipment.
If you decide to keep training you will need some well-padded gloves, fencing mask, gorget, and some rattan sticks. The club does an order every now and again for sticks so you can get them quite cheaply at a class.
All equipment is subject to a gear check before it is allowed to be used in class.
What to expect
The opportunity to practice force generation effectively and with control.
